35 – The Difference A Year Makes

I started writing The House Newf just over a year ago. I’m very happy that one year later I’m still doing it.

The essay postings aren’t always as regular as I’d like, but I keep coming back. And that’s the main thing. I’m doing something that I love to do, and that’s important.

Allow me a brief moment to congratulate myself in the bathroom mirror and pat myself on the back (insert hand-clapping sound here).

OK, enough of that. Time to move on.

I didn’t really know what I was going to write about when I started. I wasn’t hemmed in by any restrictions. This was quite different from how I was expected to write when I tried to become a historian (reminder: I failed). Imagine trying to paint a rainbow with black, white and grey paints only. That felt like that to me.

With The House Newf I had free range to write whatever I wanted. I could discuss any subject I pleased. Fuck, I could curse a fucking blue streak across the page and nobody could do sweet fuck all to stop it.

But unlimited choice can be a curse. I could write in so many different directions that I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go. I almost got stressed before writing a single word.

In a cheeky move, I went with a specifically general theme. I decided to write about things that add value to my life that may add value to yours. So that’s what I did, and that’s what I’m going to keep doing.

The best part of writing The House Newf has been finding out that people have been taking value from what I’ve had to say. Many people have left very kind messages after visiting. Some have told me they laughed and learned something. And others have told me they’ve been inspired to change something in their lives after reading some of the essays.

I don’t have words for that. Doing something to help others feel better feels great. Especially when you’re doing something you love in the process.

And then the other night I realized that people who visit The House Newf are actually adding value to my life. They’re giving me motivation to keep doing something I love doing.

Too many expressions have been rendered cliché nowadays. Thank you is one of them.

Fuck cliché, says I. There’s no other way for me to say thank you than to simply say thank you.

Thank you for visiting my blog. Thank you for your comments and likes. Thank you for sharing my stories and essays with others. And thank you for adding some value to my life. I hope I can keep adding some value to yours.

I’ve included links below to the six most popular House Newf essays from the past year. Just click an essay title and enjoy.

And remember you’re welcome to pop by anytime. Just let me know in advance. That way I can have the kettle boiled.
